The Devil's Tuning
Historical musical biopic based on the life of Blues legend, Robert Johnson
Logline: Robert Johnson sold his soul to the Devil for talent, fame, and fortune, but when he discovers it's almost time to pay his debt, he flees across the country to escape the hounds of hell that are hot on his trail. After losing his first wife and child during childbirth, Robert Johnson longs to play the guitar and sing to earn the heart of church girl, Flora Smith. However, the timid, stuttering, tone-deaf young man can’t carry a tune or play the guitar to save his life, much less have the confidence to perform in front of others. Still, he tries at the local juke joint, Tillie’s, only to get booed off stage. Drowning his sorrows in whisky while visiting the grave of his wife and child, he finds Flora with his arch enemy, Kenny Long, in the back of Kenny's car. After Kenny gives Robert a beating, Robert retrieves his gun to murder Kenny in cold, drunken blood, but Kenny can't be found. Robert takes a journey to highway 61 and 40, where he collapses under the heat, inebriated. There at the crossroads, he sees a dark, mysterious, guitar-slinging man, sitting on the porch of an abandoned house and playing a magical, cursed tune that speaks to his soul. The man is the Devil, and he offers Robert the deal of a lifetime. He’ll give him fame. He’ll give him love. He’ll give him the ability to be the best Blues player in the world in exchange for one thing: his soul. View the proof of concept screenplay below.
